What Exactly Is Grand Sumo? A Bit Of Background
Alright, before going straight to the seating arrangement and the bento box, it could be useful to chat about what Grand Sumo actually entails, or no? Grand Sumo, or ōzumō, is actually professional sumo wrestling, and really, it’s loaded with history and tradition. Originating way back when, it has transformed from a kind of religious performance to become one of Japan’s major spectator sports.
Is that not something? Tournaments are usually held six times a year, and seriously, each one lasts 15 days. They call these tournaments basho, by the way. Now, what makes sumo really cool is that it has not just wrestling, but all sorts of rituals like the ring-purifying salt toss by the wrestlers. All wrestlers aspire to climb the ranks. The top division is known as Makuuchi, and basically getting into that division is viewed as huge, in some respects.
It’s a spectacle combining strength, strategy, and rich cultural significance; really something you likely don’t see back home! Wrestlers aim to push their rival out of the ring (the dohyō) or force him to touch the ground with any part of his body other than his feet. Quick matches that only last a few seconds could happen, too! The blend of intense athleticism and age-old customs is what captures so many folks, and that makes it a must-see thing when in Japan.
Getting Class Chair Seats: Is it Worth it?
Class Chair seats, also known as masu-seki, are kind of like reserved box seats and offer a traditional, yet generally comfy way of taking in sumo. Typically, four folks share a partitioned section. Very unlike regular stadium seats, it really gives you a little bit more personal space, very handy for spreading out your stuff or kicking back when the match pauses.
So, is it worth paying a little extra for these seats? From my angle, totally! You get a decent spot from where to watch the matches without craning your neck. A big upside is probably just having a set, allocated space. This really takes away the need to arrive super early to snatch seats; still, getting there even a bit before the action is wise, too.
Anyway, with Class Chair seats, you’re usually a reasonable distance away from the ring, just so you see all that’s happening. Of course, it really comes down to personal preference, though. If being nose-to-nose with the action matters more, the ringside seats could be more up your street; in my book, that bit of comfort and room made for a super day out. Oh, I forgot to mention, tickets can vary quite a bit by seat type. It is vital to watch out for the Grand Sumo schedule, because the seating availability is based on those specific match days. Securing tickets early from reliable sources should be a high priority too.
The Delicious Lunch Situation: Bento Box Breakdown
What about lunch during the sumo event, right? With your Class Chair experience, there is typically a bento box included and very seriously, this isn’t just any ordinary meal. Often, the box packs different traditional dishes which are prepared with all the Japanese flavours you would imagine.
What was in my box? Loads! Tiny pieces of sushi, grilled fish that almost melted in my mouth, some cooked vegetables that have a tangy kind of sweetness and slices of pork. This should easily keep you happy ’til the afternoon matches.
It’s not really only about quashing the hunger, yet experiencing some culture in another way, very typically involving the local cuisine. Grabbing a cold beer or green tea that goes perfectly with your bento just heightens things, too! Really it’s very lovely sitting there enjoying Japanese dishes when you’re observing some incredible fights in the ring. It definitely adds a different perspective to the tourney visit.

Making the Most of Your Sumo Day
Alright, to ensure you seriously extract every ounce of excitement from your sumo experience, there are some tricks, alright? Get in early! This seriously makes you feel more settled, by giving a chance to see what is in the stadium before things fully get started. Strolling to the store which has all kinds of sumo goods might turn your head as well. Get yourself a hand towel of your favourite wrestler. What is better, right?
Something worth seeing is actually the lower division bouts going on before Makuuchi wrestlers. This basically allows you to experience all the skill levels and understand better where your favourite wrestler started! Throughout intermissions, see if you are capable to find the sumo museum located within the arena, too, anyway. The exhibition lets you witness the past from sumo and learn more facts.
Bear in mind, cheer on these wrestlers when the matches hit that climax part. It can get VERY hype inside! Oh, another tip for using the restroom during breaks. So avoid all of the longer queues, duck out of your seats slightly ahead of any rush of the crowds, too! Basically what matters in particular is actually soaking in the sights and sounds. It makes you completely engrossed!
