Langjokull Glacier: My Thoughts on the Snowmobile & Helicopter Combo

Okay, so you’re looking at doing the snowmobile with helicopter thing on Langjokull Glacier, right? Like your about to pull the trigger on one of those experiences? We went and I am now able to really walk you through it. It’s quite the story and truly quite something. The vast ice, and buzzing across it all? Truly awesome.

The Promise: A Mix of Air and Ice

Thing is, I spotted a pamphlet, that looked so glossy you know? All these slick pictures of whirlybirds flying over gigantic glaciers and folks whipping around on snowmobiles, right? They talked about how amazing it was. Described some once-in-a-lifetime stuff and they were really selling that combo adventure where, in effect, you take a chopper up to Langjokull Glacier, then bounce all over the ice on a snowmobile.

Up, Up, and Away: Helicopter Bliss, Basically

Basically, we showed up at the airport for our helicopter part and got checked in. Now, it’s very like an airport, right, with some forms and safety junk and they load you into the chopper and get your seatbelts snug. First thing I spotted, they have these bubble windows, to see everything right below, pretty nice. When you rise out of the field you get these views, that go forever. Little buildings below get to be tiny and there is a whole heap of nothing. Volcanos stand in the distance. Very Icelandic.

Hitting the Ice: Gear Up for Snowmobiling

We arrived to the staging area which feels like a movie. Like your landed on another planet. You all stumble out of the heli and grab a spot to pee, since it’s really very wide open and no one can see anyway. Then you start getting fitted up with snow suits and helmets. That take your hands through so many steps before setting you loose with a throttle, they want to protect you.

Snowmobile Time: Is That Ice Cracking?

I took the driver’s seat. My significant other behind me. Basically, they get everyone going slow to be sure everything works fine. Once everyone is in order. We all put our foot down and just flew across this snow sheet. They had us strung out like ducklings. Then the thing opened up so we hit warp speed and got to buzz and really felt it. Wind howled. You couldn’t talk. Just held on for grim death. The weirdest part? Sound of ice, cracking like in a cartoon, when you hit something?

What To Know Before you sign.

Thing is this isn’t your grandma’s Sunday drive, so it’s key to know if you will love what is actually provided. Do not book till you figure some things out. First.

  • Check the Weather: It sounds really basic, right? Basically, still, do it! Glacier tours? Totally depend on conditions. Call before you leave to find that its is all ready to proceed.
  • Dress Super Warm: Okay, I thought my ski gear was good enough, right? Nope. Wear extra layers. Even with their stuff, the cold will get to you eventually. Think merino wool. Consider bringing disposable heat packs.
  • Book in Advance: Thing is, small groups happen, for this one, because of the helicopter, mostly. So book! That sounds very in demand, basically.
  • Listen to the Guide: They aren’t there to wreck your fun. Like it matters if they keep you from dropping down a crack. The guides tell you how to stay safe on the glacier. Pay attention, mostly! They probably have done this one before, anyway.
  • Bring Snacks and Water: That exertion is needed. Being in snow takes something out of your engine. Throw a chocolate bar or two into a pocket for when the need suddenly appears. You’ll be grateful, later!
  • Motion sickness consideration: Are you the type to barf? Take a tablet. Choppers are pretty small, so get the Benadryl.

In general, is this good value?

Okay, like the trip sounds and feels costly and special. Like I saw somewhere in Iceland to throw down all the credit cards on that looked wonderful and unique. It sounds kind of stupid to buzz a snowmobile somewhere so different. It is a hard feeling, you need to think about.

If you like that kind of stuff, just do it. Basically!

  • The Views: Glacier from sky? Worth something for this view, at any cost. Hard to believe in most places.
  • The Snowmobile Thrill: I would not recommend this, you can buzz anywhere and get that experience.
  • Something that changes your day? Well it has the goods to shake up the routine and make it a super day!

FAQ: Your Langjokull Glacier Questions Answered

What do I need to bring with me?

Warm layers are a start, anyway. Water proof jacket too. Thick socks and gloves! Camera or good phone for the pictures. Sunglasses? Glacier’s reflect hard, that’s obvious!

Is this tour safe?

Now, these trips have inherent risk involved. They go to lengths, but still! Listen and take action. Any injuries? No one can predict if one of those cracks opens on the spot!

Are there age or physical requirements?

Often, yes! Age floors and heights will rule you out! Snowmobile driving? Takes some beef!

Can I drive the snowmobile myself?

In some places! Often require a license to ensure the company gets a certain amount of insurance!

Can the tour get canned at last minute?

Yep, but its really nothing that can be handled. Bad clouds make you just eat some food at the counter, until tomorrow!

Is there a bathroom available?

Like sometimes. Bring your fluids controlled from last evening and make a spot. Behind that snow bank looks private enough?

So, ready for some air time combined with the glacier action? The snowmobile with helicopter is kind of interesting, at any rate.
