Naxos Cruise Review: Island Hopping to Iraklia & Ano Koufonisi
Dreaming of escaping the crowds and discovering some lesser-known Greek islands? So, too you’re maybe thinking about ditching the huge ferries for something a little more intimate, right? Very, very much like this cruise I experienced from Naxos to Iraklia and Ano Koufonisi might be just what you’re looking for! Instead of battling for a spot on a packed ferry, this boat trip offers a more relaxed way to see two real treasures of the Small Cyclades. Honestly, I had zero expectations and wanted a day filled with that classic Aegean feel—clear waters, friendly faces, and maybe a hidden beach or two. I definitely wasn’t let down.

Setting Sail from Naxos: A Promising Start
The trip begins in Naxos, that very beautiful main port. I like your feeling that vacation energy right from the harbor! That’s how this one started, very different to regular ports. Meeting the boat was easy-peasy. The crew, so kind and smiling, greeted us as we hopped onboard. We pushed off right on time. The views of Naxos fading into the distance as we headed towards the open sea, so dramatic and wonderful. First impressions? Very good vibes. Also, they explained the itinerary; that first stop, Iraklia, will be coming pretty soon. Apparently the boat was also nicely sized and I quickly picked out a spot on deck to catch the rays, you know?
Iraklia: A Taste of Tranquility
Iraklia. A bit smaller than I imagined, with only about 150 permanent residents. But wow, that is very pretty and peaceful! This island offers such a sense of complete escape that maybe you didn’t know you were looking for. Instead of the busy beaches you’re thinking about in Mykonos, here you can find small coves with waters a million different shades of turquoise. Like your main village, Agios Georgios, is super cute, just a sprinkle of houses and tavernas dotted around the harbor. So, too you had time for a swim in Livadi Beach. Also, I definitely think it was some of the clearest water I’ve seen. We could spend the entire day here, very easy!
Exploring Iraklia: Beaches and Beyond
While my initial dip was Livadi Beach, there were other spots mentioned too it’s almost as there were just endless secret locations. Arguably, I did not have the chance to see them all! Another highlight could be Spilia Cave. Sadly, time just didn’t really permit, so I made the choice to chill in Agios Georgios a bit longer, very fun though and probably exactly how I want to vacation now, as I was saying.
Ano Koufonisi: Picture-Perfect Paradise
Our next place we visited was Ano Koufonisi. Honestly, prepare for picture overload; this island is jaw-dropping! Unlike Iraklia’s total isolation, Ano Koufonisi feels a bit more alive, yet that’s not super packed or something. Yet, that does have a buzzing harbor and some beaches you just cannot beat! The vibe here? Kinda laid-back, cool and summery. Oh yeah, the main draw here is the unreal coast; imagine bright cliffs, hidden caves and sandy spots. I think that they make for unbelievable pictures that you will share on Instagram a bit, I definitely did!

Ano Koufonisi Beaches: A Tough Choice
So, picking where to put down your towel is a tough choice, let’s be real. Did I pick right? Only you can say! Pori Beach, often referred to as one of the best beaches in the Cyclades, that does look like paradise. You probably will have to wade out pretty far before it gets deep, I guess, so families with kids might love that. And the little taverna that’s right there will keep you hydrated with some fresh juice too it’s almost too convenient. Then there is Finikas Beach; kinda more secluded but maybe that’s not as postcard-perfect, you know? You really can’t go wrong. Honestly, a lazy afternoon here, going for swims and soaking up the sun. This will give you the summer vibe you might need.
The Cruise Experience: What to Expect
Okay, so about that boat! The boat they used was very comfortable, with a decent amount of deck space and shaded areas for those who did not like the sun; I love it, but not all day! The staff, clearly, were pretty professional, gave good directions and, apparently, happy to answer any Qs about the islands, actually. Something to know: that a basic lunch might be included! Basically, it’s good, but nothing special—salads, bread, things like that—but very yummy if you have been swimming all day like me, well maybe your and my preferences are the same in a way.
Tips and Recommendations for Your Naxos Cruise
To fully enjoy your Naxos cruise to Iraklia and Ano Koufonisi, like your packing matters! Bring sunscreen (obviously!), a hat and sunglasses, really, the essentials. A towel is maybe provided, check before going and I did not but probably should have asked because very few things are worse than a soggy, communal towel to dry off with, you know? Also, keep a portable charger on you because you probably will be snapping tons of photos and killing the phone pretty fast. I will remember for the next time!
- Book in Advance: The best cruises sell out, particularly in that busy season, maybe months out.
- Comfortable Shoes: You are going to be walking around on rocky trails and boats, not really heel-appropriate terrain.
- Bring Cash: Apparently, the islands have few ATMs! Some taverns may not take a card and there isn’t anything sadder than finding that perfect Greek meal and not being able to pay for it.
- Check the Weather: As it goes without saying that bad weather equals a cancelled cruise. Check the forecast ahead so you are not let down.
These cruises provide fantastic experiences that will, arguably, be highlights of your travels!
